It mounted the parallel twin cylinder engine same as that of the ER-6n or Ninja650R up till its MY2011 model. From the MY2012 model, the engine was changed to the parallel 4-cylinder type based on that of Z1000. The power and torque had been drastically upgraded from its conventional 64ps/6.2kgf-m to 118ps/10.4kgf-m. What made it different from its original Z1000 engine was its power and torque at low-mid rpm range. The Z1000 engine stretched out when it reached its high rpm range, but the engine of this VERSYS generated strong power and torque from its low rpm. It reached to its maximum output and maximum torque much faster than Z1000. As a consequence, VERSYS adopted many different parts than Z1000, such as its camshaft or injection.

As for its vehicle body, it used to adopt the truss structure frame and the rear shock absorber that had been offset to the right side of the body. It was the same type as that of ER-6n or the Ninja650R. However, all of these were abolished when it was made into the new VERSYS1000. The new VERSYS1000 adopted a newly designed frame, and the layout of the rear shock absorber was renewed.

Besides that, performance factors like the engine or cornering characteristics had been revised, and exterior parts were totally renewed to make it suitable for long-hour & long-distance touring ride. One of the examples is the capacity of its fuel tank. It had been changed to 21L type from 19L type. By adopting this large volume tank, KAWASAKI had announced that its calculated cruising range in full tank state had become 400km. The windshield, whose height could be manually adjusted, was continuously used. Its enfolding style protected the rider from the wind effectively. Furthermore, it came with ABS and a rear carrier to improve its comfort level.
