The toddling ride feel of the nice old MONKEY or its compact body size are still there. It’s hasn’t been “drastically changed” in a reckless manner.
Of course, the injection system has made the engine more powerful. Especially, the smoothness of the ultra slow rotation at the acceleration start or the acceleration feel at its high rotation range are so sophisticated. It even achieved 100km/L fuel consumption according to the catalog data. It seems like it is making the best use of the injection system.
The price has been raised from 200,000 JPY to 280,000 JPY. Yet, by having an injection system, you can start the engine even after you leave it unridden for quite a while, discharging all the electricity of the battery. Moreover, you can go in the flow of the traffic in a “normal” manner as ever before. It’s as though it has raised its level of perfection by digitalizing certain parts while keeping the virtues of its analog aspect.
MONKEY was born as the play ride of the amusement park in 1961. And after 40 years, it has plunged into its new generation. The joy of riding, owning, and customizing it has not changed a bit. What a miracle motorcycle it is!
