Finally realized “the world’s best Japanese motorcycle”

From the ’50’s to the beginning of the 60’s, British vertical twin engine models from Triumph, the Norton and the BSA were dominating the United States which is the world’s largest motorcycle market. Meanwhile, the Japanese motorcycle at that time centered on the model based on European small and medium-sized motorcycles, and it was an easy-to-use motorcycle without much uniqueness from overseas.

However, Super Cub C100 (which was equipped with a 50cc 4 stroke engine that is unprecedented in the world) released by Honda in ’88 was highly appreciated from its unique styling and advanced mechanism. Especially in the United States it succeeded in breaking down the concept of “motorcycle is an vehicle of outlaw”.

After that, Honda introduced the Dream CB72 Super Sports (247cc SOHC Parallel 2 cylinder) in ’60, and the CB 77 that was expanded to 305 cc in ’62. In 1965, Dream CB 450 (444 cc) which adopted DOHC parallel 2 cylinder that was high mechanism at that time was released. However, although it exceeded the OHV’s British motorcycle at the highest speed and acceleration, it was inferior to the comfort on the highway and the status property.

While doing so, Honda announced the Dream CB750 Four at ’68 Tokyo Motor Show. It had almost the same mechanism as the GP racer, and it had a parallel four-cylinder engine that had been adopted only for some models in a commercial motorcycle such as MV Agusta and disc brakes as the first commercially sold motorcycle. It was released in the following ’69, demonstrated the performance approaching the maximum speed of 200km/h, and became an explosive hit all over the world, including the United States.
