The King of Z was first introduced to the world at the 1978 Cologne Motor Show to become the world's flagship model. Its water-cooled DOHC 6-cylinder engine had a long stroke (bore x stroke: 62 x 71mm) to suppress its width, and held down the cylinder pitch as much as possible.

HONDA had poured in its latest technology to this MY04 to make it progress dramatically. It featured equipment such as the 998cc upgraded engine, the PGM-DSFI, or the unit pro-link. It came in Repsol color, too.

Upgraded the traditional oil-cooled straight four engine to 1401cc and mounted it on its steel pipe frame. It had sufficient equipment to move as a sports tourer model, such as Φ 34 FI or the 6-speed transmission (first to be adopted on a motorcycle of this class).
