In celebration of the 100th anniversary, BMW focuses on what lies ahead – THE NEXT 100 YEARS – in its “Iconic Impulses.” They have revealed various concept models so far this year.
The BMW Group chose to unveil the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 in the USA. The megacity of Los Angeles is the perfect setting for the finale of the event and exhibition platform “BMW Group Iconic Impulses. The BMW Group Future Experience.”
The Self-Balancing system will help protect riders at any time. Motorcycle riders will be able to enjoy riding without protective gears such as helmets and padded suits. Adequate information is exchanged between rider and bike largely via sunglasses called Visor that will not only anticipate and advise when action is needed but also intervene, when required, to keep riders safe.
Next 100 Years
Head of design at BMW Motorrad Edgar Heinrich expresses this concept model as “The GREAT ESCAPE” from mundane world.
He said, “When we develop a motorcycle, we are usually thinking around five to ten years in the future. So taking a look further into the future was especially exciting for us and highly appealing.”
Motorcycle made possible for “an analogue experience in a digital era”
“In twenty years, on the assumption that most automobiles will move by an automated driving system and a lot of things will be automated by digital services, we have thought how important it is to make it possible for human to get the sensation of freedom in the world where everything is connected. We have designed the concept model to make it possible “an analogue experience in a digital era.”
Edgar said that the model has been designed on the importance of the sensation that rider itself maneuvers motorcycle, while motorcycle goes with the flow of automation as various things have been automated.
Riding without a helmet remains a fantasy for now, though. The concept vehicle will be “the Great Escape” from the controlled everyday life in the future where every risk is highly controlled.

With the neo-futuristic appearance that harks back to the old-time BMW, the new design is right to the concept of “an analogue experience in a digital era.”
Self-balancing: no chance of tilting over
The Self-Balancing mechanism keeps the motorcycle balanced both while in motion and while stationary, and prevents it from tipping over. This technology consequently allows all riders of any level of skill or expertise to keep on pushing boundaries for an ever more positive ride experience.
Sunglasses that give right information to rider
VISION NEXT 100 collects information around a rider and analyzes it in the background system. Such information is exchanged between rider and bike largely via the smart visor, sunglasses.
This assistance systems keep riders safe and riders will simply be able to enjoy the sensation of absolute freedom.
“VISION NEXT 100” is going to be presented until October 16 at “Iconic Impulses” in Los Angeles.
