It was the 400cc version of the PROJECT BIG-1, that had the glamorous body line like the 1000. The engine was based on the CB-1 and had a stamped fin. It had increased its characteristics at regular use range.
It improved its fuel efficiency by using 2-valve at low-mid speed rotation range and switching over to 4-valve at high speed rotation. It newly adopted hyper VTEC that generated effective output characteristics.
It was equipped with a REV system that automatically changed the operating valve numper according to the engine rotating condition. It used 4-valve at high rotation range and 2-valve at low-mid rotation range.
This model was based on the CBR400F. It was equipped with a half fairing, an under cowl, and a two-light halogen headlight. As the name suggests, it had an atmosphere of an endurance race model.
It mounted a cowl that took in the aerodynamic know-how earned from the races on the body of the CBX, which had been a huge hit then. It was also equipped with a blinker canceller structure.
This CBX was brought to the market to respond to the customer's request for a 4-cylinder model. It was the only bike of that class with a DOHC4 valve engine, and generated 48PS, the most powerful. Its inboard disc brake, which looked like a drum brake, and its aluminum casting swing arm made its body look perfect.
By having another "R" added to the "CBR400R", which was more or less a tourer model, it underwent a drastic change. The 35-degrees forward tilted water-cooled straight 4-unit was changed to a valve drive system developed through direct push technology. It reduced friction and pursued compactification.
It was fully covered to pursue its aerodynamic power, and it also had an inner fender on its rear body. The engine was mounted at a tilt (35 degrees forward tilting), and had a cam gear train that was resistant to high speed range.
This model adopted the straight booster exhaust, the aluminum cast wheel, and the swing arm. It was the F3 model with duralumin handlebars and footpegs.
It was brought to the market as the special edition of the ENDURANCE model which had just made its debut. It was a racer replica model that boomed in popularity for its racer style.
