This model was developed as the second generation Z1, and had the KAWASAKI magical number, 900cc. With its innovative fairing, it marked the maximum speed of 250km/h, which was an unprecedented record for a commercially sold motorcycle. Its 10.976 second quarter mile time made it the fastest model in the world.

The initial model A1 came in two export versions: the European model with 115ps power, and the North American model with 110ps power. The North American spec had a slightly high handle, forwardly placed steps, short rear fenders, and a standardly equipped side reflector. Its speedometer was indicated in miles and the model name was Ninja. The final gear reduction ratio, vehicle length and dry weight was different from the European ones. It also had minute differences by destinations. Ones for Switzerland came in 69ps spec even though it was an European spec model. The speed indication of the UK model was in miles, whereas that of the Canadian model was in kilometers. Also the California model came with a canister.
