Though 125cc class motorcycles had been attracting the fans for its easy maneuverability on street roads and its economic efficiency, few new motorcycles had been added to its line. This KLX125 was a brand new motorcycle that was finally brought to the market. It was based on the KLX140 (large wheel specification), an off-road fan model which made its debut in the US market in 2007. It was made into a 125cc model to suit the global market and to be brought not only to the Japanese market but also to other countries like the ASEAN, US, or Europe. Considering its foot grounding property, maneuverability, and handle performance, its wheel size (front and rear) was made into 19 x 16 inch size. Its steel perimeter frame, which connected the steering head and the swing arm pivot with a square pipe in a straight line, was basically the same as that of the KLX140. Still, its seat rail was reinforced and the material of the wheel rim was changed from aluminum to steel to make it good for double riding. The engine was also based on that of KLX140, but its upper part was newly designed, including the intake and the exhaust system. The bore was minimized by 4mm to make it 125cc, and the durability of the parts like the transmission gear, clutch disc or clutch damper were improved. Since it was designed as a motor scooter model that could not be ridden on express ways, its maximum speed was set to 100km/h, and thus, its setting put weight on its mid-speed range.
