[Kenny Sagawa’s Column] HONDA’s New CBR250RR; First to be Equipped with Electric Throttle and Engine Mode!

At last HONDA has officially announced the release of the new 250cc sports model ”CBR250RR”. Since a video of the new model was published a few weeks ago, it is assumed that the release will be coming soon.
CBR250RR will be manufactured in major selling country, Indonesia. It will be a HONDA model with largest engine capacity manufactured in the country. The release in Indonesia is scheduled to be at the end of 2016 and there is good news that it will also be available in Japan.
CBR250RR has been attracting attention of many two-wheel fans since it was first introduced at the ”44th Tokyo Motor Show” held in 2015 as the machine produced with ”Light Weight Super Sports Concept”. Today I’d like to introduce the new model with as much knowledge I can offer.
Best Engine Power in the Category
As expected, CBR250RR is mounted with newly developed Liquid-Cooling 4 Stroke Parallel 2 Cylinder DOHC4 Valve 250cc Engine. Maximum output has not yet been announced however, they say that it has the ”Best Engine Power In the Category” and I’m sure it will meet expectations.
Recent videos show the Fully Digital LCD Meter displaying numbers that start from 14,000rpm to 16,000rpm on the red zone which express high rpm. For your reference, the maximum output of YAMAHA YZF-R25 is 27kW(36PS)/12,000rpm and the new model will no doubt have output equivalent or greater than this. Bore x stroke is a indicator for high rpm and compared with the R25’s 60.0mm × 44.1mm, CBR250RR’s bore x stroke is 62.0×41.4mm with larger bore and shorter stroke.
As they say, ”CBR250RR is not only easy to use in the urban suburbs but will offer active rides on the circuit as well. It will offer smooth output throughout the rev range.” The revving at high rpm range and low-medium speed torque in the medium range are assumed to be well balanced to offer good performance at a wide range.
Equipped with Electric Throttle and 3 Engine Modes
The greatest eye-catching feature of this new model would probably be the ”Throttle by Wire System”. Different from former mechanical cables, this wire system sends electrical signals from the throttle via wire harness to the control motor which operates the throttle valve to open/close. This will apply a control system between the engine and throttle that offers selectable functions.
Three different engine modes can be selected on the CBR250RR. From videos taken overseas, the three modes seem to be ”Comfort”, ”Sport” and ”Sports+”.
No doubt the new CBR250RR will be the world’s first 250cc class production model to be equipped with Electric Throttle & Power Mode. This surprise is very like HONDA that has continuously lead the two-wheel industry with latest technology.
Sharp Features Similar to the Concept Model
A lot of rumor has been going on about the features of the new model but the sharp aggressive designs remain. The headlights are installed with dual LED lights that adopt features of the CBR series but blinkers and position lamp have been newly designed with innovative upper/lower two-stage structure.
What surprised me the most was the exhaust with upper/lower two-stage dual right side silencer that features eccentric designs. According to the specification chart, sizes have been modified from; Length (2035mm to 2060mm), Wheelbase (1380mm to 1389mm), Seat Height (780mm to 790mm). The vehicle is pomp-filled and slightly larger in size.
Equipped with Gull Arm
The frame is made from newly designed steel pipe truss structures which combine rigidity and flexibility as shown in the concept.
Swingarms are installed with Aluminum Gull Arm (Current CBR250R is mounted with Standard Type made from Steel) and by forming a mountain shape on the arm on the right side, overhang of the exhaust pipe has reduced offering the vehicle narrow features and more bank angle.
Gull Arms were mounted to NSR250R known to be the most powerful racing replica and CBR250RR, Super Quarter with Straight 4 Unit which shows how psyched up it is.
It is mounted with inverted fork with excellent rigidity on front side (Current Model is mounted with Regular Fork) and prolink suspension that can be adjusted 5 stages preload on the rear side. Brakes are equipped with large wave discs; front 310mm/rear240mm (Current Model :220mm), ABS on both front and rear side which offer remarkable quality to the underparts of the vehicle.
Global Model Advanced Released in Indonesia
Well what do you think of the new CBR250RR that has finally come to light?
I thought the new models would feature super sports colors but it turned out to be a sporty and luxurious global model equipped with engine mode functions, headlights and exhausts designed in detail and equivalent to selected parts mounted to large sports models.
