It inherited a low centroid layout that produced stable maneuverability. Its engine displacement volume was 530cm³. In addition to its newly designed light aluminum forged piston, it adopted a new 4-valve combustion chamber (intake: 26mm diameter/exhaust: 22mm diameter). It trimmed its weight by adopting a horsepower saving design using an aluminum balancer sleeve and a resin intake manifold (it was the first YAMAHA model to adopt it). By optimizing the FI setting, raising the clutch capacity, and matching it with a newly designed CVT, it succeeded at drawing out powerful torque at low-mid speed range and achieve excellent drivability. Also, the O2 feedback control and three-way catalyst installation contributed to its environmental countermeasure.
It inherited the aluminum diamond frame created from the YAMAHA’s original CF aluminum die-casting technology. It had optimized the rigidity balance to draw out the characteristics of the new engine by making the steel of the engine suspension area and the radiator suspension crossmember thick, and by tuning the tightening rigidity. Also, by having a newly designed aluminum die-casting rear arm, it provided a comfortable steering feeling and harmonized sports and utility aspect in a high dimensional manner.
It had newly adopted a right/left individual aluminum die-casting rear arm which stroke a balance between a sporty handling and a swinging appearance. By reducing the weight around the swing arm by approximately 3.5kg, it improved its front wheel load distribution. This made a solid contribution to its travel performance that traced what it aimed, and its maneuverability which was both light and stable. The chain tensioner at the arm end had the same structure as that of a supersports model to optimize its rigidity balance. In addition to this, it adopted a belt drive to further draw out a direct feeling (the first commercially sold commuter motorcycle to adopt). It could extract linear drive power in accordance with the throttle operation, and enabled the driver to have a united feeling with the bike.
