It underwent its first full model change and upgraded its engine to 929cc. It also increased its power by adopting injection system.

It is the Kawasaki original American Sports model which mounted the same engine as GPZ900R Ninja, the world's fastest supersport model back in those days.

It mounted a FI version of the MY98 900RR Straight-4 engine and a 4-2-1-2 exhaust on a 600 type mono backbone frame that was thickened to intensify its rigidity. It also standardly equipped HISS.

It was developed as the successor of Z1, and adopted the Kawasaki magical number 900cc. It had an innovative fairing and achieved 250km/h, the highest speed as a commercially sold model. It scored 10.976 seconds at a quarter-mile race and was ranked as the world's fastest model at that time.

It is a cruiser model with excellent controllability. The powerful body doesn't pale against the liter class machine. The 900cc V-twin engine has adopted 4-valve, and its operation has become smoother.

The cab diameter has been changed from 28mm to 26mm, and its controllability and fuel efficiency have improved. The tank, side cover shape, and the suspension area have been slightly changed. The model code is Z900A4.
